“Master Chef of Great Britain! What a find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2016
Found the Hankridge on the web and had a great lunch with friends. For those not in the know to become a Master Chef you have to have achieved the highest levels of cooking in the UK and Mark is no exception (I have had two master chefs work for me). He produces a balance of pub and fine dining dishes that are just mouth watering and exceptionally well priced.
The staff are friendly and have good knowledge. I will be back many times. Thanks again

“You don’t have to be a jeweller to spot a gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2016
I’d been tipped off about The Hankridge Arms by a family friend and decided to give it a go.
It is in the middle of the most unlikely of locations for a place of its type, what with it being within a newish retail park which is on the edge of Taunton and just a couple of hundred yards from Junction 25 of the M 5. It is very close to Sainsbury’s supermarket. Thankfully, as things transpired, the setting didn’t put me off, so, don’t let it put you off.

When I entered the building, I turned to my wife and said, ‘Well, they’ve made a good job of this place!’, because at the time I thought that it was one of those new builds that have been designed to look as though they are centuries old. But to my surprise, the building really did turn out to be centuries old.
It also turned out that I’d come across the chef / proprietor (Mark Roberts) many, many years before, and he hasn’t lost his touch, or his taste.
As for the food; well, the Hankridge is sure worth a visit. And you don’t have to take my word for it, let your taste-buds do the testing for you.
When I was growing up, belly pork was considered to be a cheap cut, the poor man’s Sunday dinner; but seemingly, no longer.

On this occasion (and there will be others), I ordered the belly pork and it was terrific.
Give the dish a go.
Give The Hankridge a go.
The service was snappy and the prices reflected the quality of the food, in that, they were both very good

“A Warm Welcome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2016
After getting stranded recently in Sainsbury car park on a busy Sunday lunchtime, my husband and I decided we better get something to eat whilst the traffic cleared. The nearest place to have Sunday lunch was the Hankridge Arms. Luckily they had a table for 2, a warm welcome from the staff and a lovely open fire! The food was of a standard you would not expect in a pub. It was more like a gourmet restaurant but at pub prices. The salmon in lobster veloute, the warm chocolate brownie and chocolate dipped fruit were also a hit! We went back again the next week for a valentines treat and the food was of an equally high standard! I would highly recommend this hidden gem!

“Great meal”

Great food and service . This is a popular venue with plenty of character as it is in an historic pub. We could not fault either the food or the service.

“Characterful pub and restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2016
Travelling between exeter and Bristol came off the motorway to see signs for this pub. Was expecting a typical chain like place as it was in the middle of a retail park. How wrong I was this was a delightful historic pub that had been carefully restored. Had the chefs pie which was chicken and Dorset blue vinny which was tasty and filling.

“Excellent food in fantastic surroundings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2015
This was our first visit but we’ll definitely be back. Unbelievable building very tastefully restored. Excellent food – we had the duck, beef and ale pie, and calves liver and bacon. All perfectly cooked. The house wine was very good and it was nice to have a good range of choices.
It was our waitress’s first day and she did extremely well. She was “shadowed” by one of the other waitresses which was a very good policy by the management. Gives the new staff that bit of extra confidence.

“Lovely meal in a historic building”

We had five very different meals brought to the table together and piping hot. All delicious too. The building has been tastefully restored with some photos of its restoration in the corridor on the way to the very clean toilets. Log fires in inglenook fireplaces finished the scene. The staff were very busy but were helpful and pleasant. Will defiantly be going again.

“Wonderful experience!!”
Food was delicious, beautifully presented and delivered by knowledgable attentive staff. I can see why it gets very busy here! This 16th century listed farmhouse is full of character and welcoming warmth, we all will be back and shall tell others of our brilliant experience! Keep up the good work.

“Fine Luncheon in Taunton”
I was quite surprised to find fine dining at the Hankridge Arms in Taunton. My husband and I had lunch here over the Christmas holidays. Tired of the heavy roasted meat and two veg meals everywhere, we were longing for a finer and more imaginative menu, the Hankridge Arms certainly delivered. He ordered the Duck Pate and I ordered the Salmon Sandwich both were exquisite, perfectly portioned, flavorful and expertly plated. As we sat and ate our lunch we both thought how this restaurant we be ideal in California. We look forward to returning. Well done, definitely a 5 star!

“Possibly the best alternative at J25 on M5”
Needed to find somewhere just off the m5 to meet family traveling north from Exeter early evening. Various options were considered and the Hankridge chosen on basis of previous expirience where quality of menu and setting more important than alternative fast food options 2 for 1 etc.
Greeted by staff and shown to table in the restaurant, although could have opted to sit in the bar.
Menus arrived and drinks ordered. Good choice of interesting dishes, drinks arrived and order placed. If in a hurry this place might not be your best choice, but as we were in no rush had time to chat before meals arrived, all of which were delicious, on well warmed plates. Rounded off with puddings, actually just one others having ice cream. Coffee also very good.
Will definitely be returning when suitable excuse offers itself.

“Superb – Highly Recommend!!”
Having been recommended to come to the Hankridge Arms by friends, my partner and I did so with another couple and honestly could not recommend the place any more.
From the arrival, parking is easy and the staff who greet you are very friendly. The food and beverage options are very good and even the chef came out to speak to us before our meal, which made us feel extremely valued despite being very busy.

When the food came, it was deliciously cooked as we asked and there was plenty of side dishes for us all to share too, where the waitress and kitchen staff could not have done any more to make our visit nothing short than excellent.
The atmosphere was very nice, not too loud and not quiet, which made it feel very welcoming and warming.
Have not had a better meal or experience like this anywhere in Taunton before and therefore, the staff and restaurant deserves the time to be recommended to others.

“Consistently Good”
I’ve been here several times now and the food is always really good. Even on a cold wet Wednesday evening in January there is a nice atmosphere and the staff are pleasant and efficient if a little overstretched at times. I’ve no complaints though. The food is great quality and comes in generous portions and gives excellent value for money. I’m certain I will be back.

“Excellent lunch stop”
I found them on my phone in the nearby motorway services car park – no postcode on the website but they’re easy to find, just off M5 J25. It’s odd, a 500 year old farmhouse, now a pub, surrounded by a shopping centre and just off the motorway. It was busy on a Tuesday lunchtime but they found me a good table. I had a pint of fairly low alc bitter and their 11 pound 2 course lunch – haddock fish cake with chilli sauce, a good little starter then an excellent plaice fillet with potatoes and onion & beetroot salad. Friendly staff, reasonably prompt service, food much better than expected for a pub in a shopping centre right by the motorway junction. I think I’ll be back on future trips between London and Devon.
