Are you travelling to North Dorset? Why not pop in to our other Restuarant Pub Hotel, The Crown Inn at Marnhull

The Crown Inn at Marnhull is a 16th Century coaching inn steeped in centuries of history, located in the Blackmore Vale in North Dorset. It is  said that this public house has offered refreshment to travellers since the 16th Century and possibly as early as the reign of King Henry VIII.

Most notably this public house features as the ‘Pure Drop Inn’ in the iconic novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles (1891) by English Author Thomas Hardy. Tess of the d’Urbervilles is considered a major eighteenth-century English novel and possibly Hardy’s fictional masterpiece.

The village of Marnhull is the ‘Marlott’ of Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles and it was imagined by him to be the birth place of his heroine Tess. In Marlott was the cottage which was the home of Tess, the church holds the graveyard where she buried her baby and the Pure Drop Inn (The Crown Inn) is where Tess’s father celebrates on hearing that he is the descendant of a noble family.
